The Hyperactivity Hoax
by Sydney Walker
This book offers support for families of children with learning disabilities (dyslexia). It is appropriate for educators and parents and introduces theory relating to childhood learning disabilities from the perspective of the family.
There is a growing fear that children are needlessly being given drugs by physicians for "inattentiveness" when in fact relatively common ailments, ranging from sleep disturbances to physical hearing ailments, are the cause of the inability of the student to attend. Walker dubs this trend as "the trash can diagnosis of the 90's."  It is estimated that in the United States alone five million children were labeled ADHD, doubling the rate of students diagnosed with this "disorder" since 1990.

12 Effective Ways to Help Your ADD/ADHD Child
by Laura J. Stevens M.S.

This book is a must for all parents of children who have been diagnosed with an attention deficit disorder or hyperactivity.  It gives parents drug-free alternatives to consider as possible causes or contributing factors to their child's inattentiveness.

The author discusses in details factors to consider such as the lack of certain vitamins, allergies to certain chemicals and foods, a possible yeast infection etc. She gives documentation from various studies and suggestions for parents to consider trying to help their child to lessen, or even overcome, their attention deficit disorder.

Missing, however, in the book is the consideration of hearing or vision problems as well as a serious weakness in listening and visual recall.  Thus, it is recommended that parents read the book, Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure, listed above, along with Ms. Steven's book for information on these contributing or resulting factors as well as the ones discussed by Ms. Stevens.
